New Zealand secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Solomon Islands in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship today. The Solomon Islands needed a win against the strong New Zealand team to boost their chances of advancing in the tournament.
New Zealand had already qualified for the semi-finals with previous wins over New Caledonia and Tahiti, putting additional pressure on the Solomon Islands to pull off an upset. Despite facing the challenges of high temperatures and injuries to two key players, New Zealand struck first, with Piper O’Neill scoring in the 11th minute.
The Solomon Islands fought hard, with midfielders Mikaela Bangalan and Natalie Young working diligently to protect their defense. New Zealand nearly doubled their lead before halftime, but Fiona Goroani made a crucial save, denying Derelle Avery following a dangerous cross from Heidi Draay.
In the second half, New Zealand continued to create chances to extend their lead but struggled to find the finishing touch. With this win, New Zealand will advance to face Tonga in the semi-finals next week.
