New Zealand secured a hard-fought victory over the Solomon Islands, winning 1-0 in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship. The Solomon Islands aimed for a win to enhance their chances of advancing in the tournament, but faced a formidable New Zealand team that had already qualified for the semi-finals after convincing victories over New Caledonia and Tahiti.
Playing under midday heat and missing two regular players due to injuries, New Zealand managed to take the lead in the 11th minute with an impressive goal from Piper O’Neill. Despite the setback, the Solomon Islands put in a valiant effort, with midfielders Mikaela Bangalan and Natalie Young working hard to bolster their defense and absorb the pressure.
As the first half progressed, New Zealand came close to extending their lead, but Fiona Goroani made a crucial save to thwart Derelle Avery’s attempt following a well-delivered cross from Heidi Draay. In the second half, New Zealand continued to generate scoring chances, yet they were unable to convert any further opportunities.
With this victory, New Zealand now prepares to face Tonga in the semi-finals next week.
