New Zealand’s Head Coach for the Sevens team, Tomasi Cama, has announced the addition of three promising players to the squad as they prepare for the upcoming 2024-25 HSBC SVNS Series. The new recruits include Oli Mathis from Waikato, Sofai Maka from North Harbour, and Joey Taumateine, who is moving up from the New Zealand Men’s Sevens Development team.

Cama expressed enthusiasm about incorporating young talent into the team, emphasizing the joy of fostering their development. “As coaches, it excites us to bring young people in and help with their growth,” he stated, acknowledging that these players will need to adapt quickly to the demands of international rugby.

Dylan Collier will take on the captaincy, supported by seasoned players Joe Webber and Sione Molia, both of whom bring extensive experience with over 50 caps in the black jersey. Cama highlighted the team’s commitment to their core values, saying, “We’ve talked a lot about connecting to our DNA. This team is about hard work, that will be the foundation that allows us to play a brand of rugby we all love; exciting, free playing, unstructured. That’s what we want to go out there to do.”

This strategic incorporation of fresh talent alongside seasoned players showcases New Zealand’s commitment to both nurturing emerging players and maintaining high performance standards in the competitive world of rugby sevens. With a balanced mix of youth and experience, the team is poised for an exciting season ahead.

In summary, the New Zealand 7s team is gearing up for the new series with fresh talents and a strong leadership structure, suggesting a positive outlook for the upcoming challenges.
