The Coral Coast 7s is reinforcing its position as one of the foremost rugby tournaments in the region, with the New Zealand Men’s 7s development team arriving in Fiji, eager to compete against high-caliber opponents. Head Coach Scott Curry expressed enthusiasm for the tournament, emphasizing its significance for players who are either newcomers to the sevens format or those returning from injuries.

Curry highlighted the unique value of competing in Fiji, a nation renowned for its illustrious sevens rugby heritage. “Fiji is the home of sevens, so to come here and play some good quality sides and get exposure to really strong sevens rugby is really valuable for us going forward,” he noted.

The squad represents a mix of promising young talent and seasoned players, featuring several athletes who are progressing through New Zealand’s under-18 ranks. Curry emphasized the importance of this tournament as a chance for these players to test their skills against elite competition.

He also acknowledged the cultural significance of sevens rugby in Fiji, which was made clear to the team during their pre-departure meetings. “One of our first meetings before coming over was about how special sevens is and how much it means to the Fijian people. We’re really looking forward to an exciting week and strong support,” Curry remarked.

With the Coral Coast 7s gaining momentum year after year, Curry believes the tournament is crucial for player development and plays a vital role in fostering rugby connections between Fiji and New Zealand. The competition is set to commence this Thursday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka and will be broadcast live on FBC Sports, promising an exhilarating week of rugby action.
