The Northern Division experienced its inaugural fire incident of 2025 early on New Year’s Day when flames consumed a four-bedroom house in Waiqele, Labasa. The homeowners, Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad, were vacationing in New Zealand with family when they received the distressing news from a relative.

“Our caretaker was also away for the New Year holiday when the fire broke out at around 3 a.m.,” reported Ms. Devi. She expressed gratitude towards a neighbor who promptly notified the National Fire Authority (NFA) about the fire.

Despite facing resource limitations, firefighters made courageous efforts to control the blaze. Mr. Prasad acknowledged the challenges faced by the fire crew, who managed with just one water tank and a damaged hose. The fire resulted in significant destruction, including the loss of two cars and partial damage to two vans.

The couple believes the fire may have been intentionally set, citing past incidents of threats, stone-throwing, and an attempted break-in at their nearby shop located close to the Waiqele Airport. “These events keep us hopeful that the authorities will quickly bring those responsible to justice,” Ms. Devi remarked.

Although the estimated damage is around $250,000, the family maintains a positive outlook. They have filed a police report and trust that the authorities will investigate thoroughly to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Puamau Sowane, the chief executive officer of the NFA, expressed his sympathies to the family and noted the area’s lack of fire hydrants and water sources, which complicated firefighting efforts. “The available water in the tank was fully utilized,” he stated. He urged residents, especially those living outside town boundaries, to exercise additional caution due to the distances from fire stations.

Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, acting Divisional Police Commander North, confirmed that an investigation is underway. “We are awaiting the NFA report to determine our next course of action,” he said.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and collaboration with local authorities in ensuring safety. The resilience and hope demonstrated by the affected family is commendable and showcases a strong spirit in the face of adversity. With ongoing investigations and community support, there is hope for a resolution and prevention of future tragedies.
