Spread the love

In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2025, the Northern Division experienced its first fire incident when a four-bedroom residence in Waiqele, Labasa, was completely consumed by flames. The homeowners, Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad, were in New Zealand vacationing with family when they received the distressing news from a relative.

Devi expressed her gratitude towards a neighbor who quickly alerted the National Fire Authority (NFA) about the blaze, which broke out around 3 AM while their caretaker was away for the New Year holiday. Firefighting efforts were hampered by limited resources; Mr. Prasad noted that the team had only one water tank and a damaged hose, yet they fought hard to contain the fire.

The fire resulted in significant damage, destroying two vehicles and partially damaging two others. The couple suspects arson due to a history of threats and vandalism they have faced at their shop located near Waiqele Airport. Devi hopes that authorities will swiftly apprehend those responsible, stating, “These events make us hopeful that the authorities will act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.” Despite an estimated $250,000 in damages, the family remains optimistic, having filed a police report in hopes of uncovering the truth and preventing future incidents.

Puamau Sowane, CEO of NFA, expressed sympathy for the affected family, highlighting the challenges faced due to the lack of fire hydrants and water sources in the area. He emphasized the importance of residents, particularly those living outside town boundaries, to exercise extra caution due to the distance from fire stations.

Acting Divisional Police Commander North Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo confirmed that an investigation is underway and they are awaiting the NFA’s report to determine the next steps. This incident marks the first fire report for the Northern Division in 2025.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the vital role community support plays in emergencies. The family’s resilience amid adversity is commendable, and their proactive approach to seeking justice reflects a community striving to ensure safety for all residents.

Summary: On New Year’s Day 2025, a house fire in Waiqele, Labasa, led to significant damage while homeowners were abroad. They suspect arson due to prior threats and vandalism, and are hopeful that authorities will investigate thoroughly. Despite the losses, the family remains positive and proactive in addressing the situation.
