Spread the love

The Northern Division experienced its first fire incident of 2025 when a four-bedroom residence in Waiqele, Labasa, was completely consumed by flames in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad, the homeowners currently in New Zealand celebrating the holidays with their family, received the shocking news from a relative.

In the absence of their caretaker, who was also away for the New Year celebrations, the couple expressed their gratitude toward a neighbor who promptly alerted the National Fire Authority (NFA) about the fire. Despite facing challenges with limited resources, firefighters worked diligently to control the situation, utilizing a single water tank and a damaged hose.

The fire inflicted significant damage, destroying two vehicles and causing partial damage to two vans. The couple suspects that the fire may have been a result of arson, referencing earlier threatening incidents, including stone-throwing and an attempted break-in at their shop located near Waiqele Airport. Ms. Devi mentioned their hope that authorities would soon bring those responsible to justice.

Although the estimated damages amount to $250,000, the couple maintains an optimistic outlook. They have filed a police report and expressed trust in law enforcement to uncover the truth and take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In response to the fire, NFA CEO Puamau Sowane extended sympathy to the family, highlighting the difficulties firefighters faced due to the area lacking fire hydrants and sufficient water sources. He emphasized the importance of residents living outside urban boundaries to be especially cautious, given the distances from fire stations.

Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that an investigation is underway, pending the NFA’s report to guide their next steps.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and support during emergencies. The swift actions of neighbors and first responders are commendable, showcasing how collective efforts can help in times of crisis. It also highlights the necessity for investments in fire safety infrastructure in less accessible areas to enhance protection for residents against such unfortunate events.
