The Northern Division experienced its first fire incident of 2025 early on New Year’s Day when a four-bedroom house in Waiqele, Labasa, was completely consumed by flames. The homeowners, Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad, were away in New Zealand with their family for the holiday season and received the heartbreaking news from a relative.

“Our caretaker was away for the New Year holiday when the incident occurred around 3 am,” said Ms. Devi. She expressed gratitude towards their neighbor, who promptly notified the National Fire Authority (NFA) about the fire.

Despite facing considerable challenges, including limited resources such as only one water tank and a damaged hose, the fire officers worked diligently to control the fire. Mr. Prasad acknowledged their efforts: “They did their best under the circumstances.” Unfortunately, the fire resulted in significant damage, destroying two cars and partially damaging two vans.

The couple has reasons to suspect arson, given previous threats and incidents, including stone-throwing and an attempted break-in at their shop located near Waiqele Airport. “These events make us hopeful that the authorities will act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice,” Ms. Devi shared.

While the damages have been estimated at $250,000, the couple maintains an optimistic outlook. “We have lodged a police complaint and trust the authorities will uncover the truth and prevent such tragedies from affecting others,” she added.

In response, NFA’s chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane, expressed sympathy for the affected family and noted the difficulties faced by firefighters in the area, who lack sufficient fire hydrants and water resources. “The available water in the tank was fully utilized,” he explained, urging residents living outside urban areas to be more vigilant due to their distance from fire stations.

The Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that an investigation is underway. “We are awaiting the NFA report to determine our next course of action. This is the first fire report in the North for 2025,” he stated.

This tragic event highlights the importance of community vigilance and the need for improved fire safety measures in rural areas. It serves as a reminder that even in times of distress, hope and resilience remain paramount.

Summary: A fire on New Year’s Day destroyed a home in Waiqele, Labasa, while the owners were abroad. The couple suspects arson due to previous threats and has lodged a police complaint. Firefighters faced challenges due to limited resources, but the couple remains optimistic about recovery and justice. Local authorities are investigating the incident while calling for greater fire safety measures in rural areas.
