The Fiji Police Force reported that a total of 934 traffic infringement notices were issued from December 22 to December 25. Among these violations, 23 drivers were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, 440 individuals received citations for minor offences, while 311 were cited for speeding, underscoring speeding as the leading cause of traffic accidents.
Other infractions included 58 cases of careless driving, alongside 51 instances each of drivers failing to produce their licenses and not wearing seat belts. Moreover, 10 drivers were charged for exceeding passenger limits, 8 faced penalties for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 were caught operating vehicles with expired licenses.
Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized the ongoing need for traffic awareness and adherence to road regulations. He urged drivers to ensure they have the necessary documentation readily available and to plan their trips wisely. “Get enough rest and refrain from excessive alcohol consumption when you know you have to drive,” he advised.
This emphasis on safety and responsible driving is crucial, as it reflects the police’s commitment to reducing road accidents and protecting the community. The efforts to raise awareness about traffic rules aim to foster a culture of safety on the roads.
In summary, the article highlights the serious traffic violations during a busy holiday period and the urgent call by authorities for safer driving practices.
