The birth of a child is invariably a significant event, but it becomes even more memorable when it coincides with New Year’s Day. At the Suva Colonial War Memorial Hospital, Mereseini Likucokocoko celebrated the arrival of her baby boy just 44 minutes after midnight on Tuesday, arriving 11 days ahead of schedule. The newborn weighed 2.85 kilograms.
Despite facing complications and the trials of labor, Ms. Likucokocoko expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the midwives and medical team for their exceptional care. “It was a surprise; we didn’t expect him until January 11, but I thank God for this healthy gift,” she shared, noting that this moment would be cherished forever by her family.
In a similar vein, Akeneta Ranadi, a 29-year-old woman from Nadi, welcomed a baby girl at Nadi Hospital, also unexpectedly arriving before her due date of January 8. “It’s a blessing to give birth on New Year’s Day,” Ms. Ranadi stated with joy, as her daughter weighed 3.78 kilograms. Living alone with her children while her partner works abroad, she considers the baby a positive omen for the year ahead, saying, “This is the first blessing of the year, and I’m hopeful for more blessings in the months ahead.”
In the northern region, Senimili Duavokavoka from Ligau Village on Kia Island rushed to Labasa Hospital on New Year’s Eve and delivered a healthy son, Suliasi Vunibola Turaganivalu, at 2 AM. Weighing in at 3.7 kilograms, she described him as the perfect gift that completes their family. “When I heard his first cry, I felt relief and joy,” Ms. Duavokavoka said, expressing her gratitude to Jesus for this blessing, while her husband, Seresio Turaganivlau, radiated pride in this pivotal moment of fatherhood.
This festive start to the year portrays a sense of hope and renewal as families celebrate their new additions, embodying the spirit of joy that New Year’s Day brings. The arrival of these babies not only marks a new chapter in their families’ lives but also symbolizes optimism for what lies ahead in the new year.
