The streets of Labasa Town came alive yesterday with the dynamic performance of the Washington Tin Band, providing a vibrant highlight for the community following the absence of a New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. The 13-member band, originating from Lami Village, Suva, entertained audiences with their spirited music made from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers, captivating onlookers outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.
Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour commenced earlier this week in Bua, with plans to visit Labasa and then head to Savusavu and Taveuni by the end of the week. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages to wish everyone a happy New Year through our music,” Mr. Ravadra noted. This marks the second consecutive year the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread joy during the New Year festivities.
During their performances, a tin is placed among the musicians and a dancer, inviting audience members to contribute generously. The funds collected will support the band members, particularly students, with their back-to-school expenses. Mr. Ravadra emphasized, “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to play music during this tour.”
In addition, a separate group of younger band members is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that no one misses out on the New Year’s spirit. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he added.
