New Year Joy Takes Center Stage in Labasa Town!

The streets of Labasa Town came alive yesterday as the Washington Tin Band delivered a lively performance, bringing joy to the community following the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. This 13-member band, originating from Lami Village in Suva, captivated audiences with their unique sounds made from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers while performing outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their tour, which began earlier this week in Bua, aims to wish everyone a happy New Year through music. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by the end of the week,” Mr. Ravadra said. This marks the second consecutive year the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu in an effort to spread New Year cheer.

During their energetic performances, the band encourages contributions from spectators by placing a tin among the musicians. The funds collected will support the band members, particularly students, with their back-to-school expenses. Mr. Ravadra emphasized that there’s no fixed donation amount—”Whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have sacrificed their time to perform during this tour.”

Adding to their outreach, Ravadra mentioned another group of younger band members performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the spirit of New Year’s celebration reaches everyone. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he remarked.

The Washington Tin Band’s initiative not only provides entertainment but also highlights the importance of community support, making their efforts a meaningful way to start the year for families in the North and beyond. This commitment to lifting spirits while addressing educational needs reflects an inspiring model of how music can foster unity and support within communities.

In essence, the Washington Tin Band not only brings festive cheer but also reinforces community connections and awareness regarding educational expenses for children. By merging entertainment with social support, they embody a hopeful new year filled with shared joy and the promise of a brighter future for local families.
