In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2025, the Northern Division faced its first fire incident when a four-bedroom house in Waiqele, Labasa was completely consumed by flames. Homeowners Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad were on holiday in New Zealand when they received the alarming news from a relative.

The couple expressed their gratitude towards their neighbor who promptly alerted the National Fire Authority (NFA) despite the caretaker being away for the holiday. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to limited resources, utilizing only one water tank and dealing with a damaged hose, yet they made every effort to control the fire.

The blaze caused substantial destruction, including the loss of two cars and partial damage to two vans. Given the couple’s previous experiences with threats and vandalism at their shop near Waiqele Airport, they suspect arson may be involved. Ms. Devi conveyed their hope that authorities will take decisive action against those responsible, adding, “We have lodged a police complaint and trust the authorities will uncover the truth and prevent such tragedies from affecting others.”

The financial impact on the couple is estimated to be around $250,000, but they remain optimistic about the situation.

Puamau Sowane, CEO of the NFA, conveyed sympathy for the affected family, highlighting the difficulties posed by a lack of fire hydrants and resources in the area. He stressed the importance of residents maintaining heightened caution due to the distance from fire stations.

Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that an investigation is underway, pending the report from the NFA, noting this incident as the first fire report in the region for 2025.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community support and vigilance, especially during holiday seasons when many may be away from home. The resilience and optimism demonstrated by the affected family are commendable, and there is hope that justice will be served while improving preventive measures for the future.

In summary, the swift response of neighbors and authorities gives a glimmer of hope in a dire situation, emphasizing the power of community in facing adversity together.
