The streets of Labasa Town vibrated with energy as the Washington Tin Band performed yesterday, marking a festive occasion following the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. This 13-member band, hailing from Lami Village in Suva, delighted the crowds with melodies created from empty drums, tins, sticks, and other containers, bringing joy to onlookers outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.
Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their tour began earlier in the week in Bua, with plans to visit various villages in Labasa before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by the week’s end. He expressed that the tour aims to share New Year wishes through their music, further emphasizing that this marks the second consecutive year the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread festive cheer.
During their performances, the band utilizes a collection tin placed amongst the musicians, encouraging spectators to contribute. Proceeds will support the band members, particularly students, with back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” Ravadra explained. Additionally, a younger group of band members is performing in Suva, ensuring that the spirit of New Year reaches a wider audience.
The initiative by the Washington Tin Band beautifully combines entertainment with community support, offering a meaningful way to start the year for families across the North and beyond. Their efforts resonate with the vital role music plays in fostering joy and unity. As the new year unfolds, such community-driven initiatives remind us all of the power of shared experiences and collective support, providing a beacon of hope and connection within local communities.
In summary, the Washington Tin Band not only revives the festive spirit but also reinforces community ties, demonstrating how art can contribute positively to the well-being of society. Their commitment to uplifting spirits and addressing educational needs is truly inspiring and speaks volumes about the impact of local culture and music in nurturing joy and togetherness.
