Despite the overcast skies, the beaches and parks in Lautoka were vibrant with activity as families gathered to celebrate the new year yesterday. Many vehicles lined up along Lomolomo Beach as people sought out available spots to enjoy the day.
Waisea Nawasoni, a resident of Natokawaqa, was among those fortunate enough to secure a place for his family. He expressed gratitude for being able to welcome the new year with loved ones, including relatives visiting from abroad. “We had all spent Christmas in Lautoka, and we decided to come and celebrate the new year here at Lomolomo Beach,” he shared.
Ifran Ali Sahib also made the trip and arrived at the beach early with his extended family, carrying their lunch supplies. He noted that five families collectively came to the beach to enjoy the day, and remarked on the significant turnout for the celebrations.
Meanwhile, members of the Nayavu Women’s Club from Wainibuka, Tailevu, chartered a bus for a sightseeing road trip. Departing at 5 am, they made a stop at Marine Drive in Lautoka for lunch. Club member Mere Vunirewa shared that they had a total of 48 women participating in the adventure. “We thought about chartering this bus to take a road trip just for sightseeing,” she said, adding their gratitude for the pleasant weather following recent rain.
The group planned to visit Fulton College in Sabeto, Denarau, and spend the night at the nature park at the Yadua sand dunes before returning to their village the next day.
This celebration showcased the community’s resilience and spirit, as families gathered to create joyous memories together, reinforcing the ties that bind them, no matter the weather.
The sense of togetherness and positivity among the residents is a heartwarming reminder of the importance of community celebrations, especially at the start of a new year.
