Several organizations are anticipated to make their debut on the securities exchange next year, building on the momentum created by SUN Insurance’s recent success. The chief executive officer of the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX), Sheraj Obeyesekere, reported that this excitement surrounding share investments has grown since SUN’s listing in 2019, which was marked by an oversubscribed initial public offering (IPO) and resounding success.
While no formal applications have been submitted yet, there are indications from several corporates actively preparing to enter the market. Mr. Obeyesekere expressed optimism, stating, “We should see at least two to three listings in 2025.”
To facilitate these anticipated listings, SPX plans to launch a public awareness campaign aimed at promoting share investments. “There is a growing demand for responsible and regulated investment opportunities among the public, and we want to position share investments as a primary option,” Mr. Obeyesekere explained. In addition, the exchange will review its listing rules in 2025, allowing capital raising through the stock market to become viable for a wider range of companies. Stakeholders will be consulted throughout this process to ensure a collaborative approach that will support Fiji’s market while adhering to the essential principles of stock market operations.
Furthermore, the SPX is actively working to enhance its international presence. Mr. Obeyesekere noted that the exchange plans to attend the World Federation of Exchanges Annual Meeting in Malaysia this month, where they aim to sign memorandums of understanding with other exchanges. This initiative is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing and access to technical expertise as part of SPX’s growth strategy.
In summary, the outlook for the South Pacific Stock Exchange is promising, with plans for new listings and efforts to educate the public about investment opportunities. The collaboration with international exchanges adds to the excitement surrounding the future of the Fijian securities market, indicating a positive trajectory for investment in the region.
