The Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens tournament is poised to unveil new initiatives for this year’s competition. At a launch event held at the headquarters of Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd in Suva, details of both the Fiji Bitter Yasawa Sevens and Wairiki Sevens tournaments were announced.
A significant update this year is the introduction of under-15 to under-18 categories in the Wairiki Sevens format, with the exception of Netball and Volleyball. This change aims to enhance grassroots player development in the region, reflecting a commitment to fostering young talent in the sport.
The tournament anticipates participation from 32 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams, highlighting a growing interest and engagement in rugby among different demographics.
Mark Spencer, General Manager of Paradise Beverages, emphasized the value of their longstanding partnership, now in its 17th year, which showcases the support from local businesses for sports development in Fiji.
Looking ahead, the Nacula Yasawa Sevens will take place from December 6-7 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, while the Wairiki Sevens will occur from December 11-14 at Wairiki grounds in Taveuni.
This effort not only promotes healthy competition but also strengthens community ties and offers young athletes an opportunity to shine on a larger stage. The commitment to youth development is particularly encouraging, as it lays the foundation for the future of rugby in Fiji.
In summary, the Wairiki Sevens tournament’s new format is a significant step forward in fostering youth talent, with upcoming events promising exciting competition and community engagement.
