Dr. Apisalome Movono, the newly appointed chief executive officer of the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), emphasizes that the true wealth of the nation lies in its people. He aims to enhance the institution’s operational systems in various areas, which he considers crucial for delivering improved outcomes.

In an interview with The Fiji Times, Dr. Movono expressed his commitment to scrutinizing TSLS’s existing frameworks, identifying gaps, and improving the synergy between different systems. He noted that by strengthening these systems, TSLS would better facilitate educational opportunities that meet the current and future demands of the country.

“An investment in our students is an investment in the future development and prosperity of this country,” Dr. Movono stated. He highlighted the importance of education and upskilling, warning that neglect in these areas could result in consequences similar to those experienced by other nations that failed to invest in their people.

Dr. Movono appreciates the government’s significant investment in education and training, affirming that these changes within TSLS would rely heavily on evidence-based practices. He plans to implement adjustments informed by reports and data from both internal and external research, citing historical evidence from the first Great Council of Chiefs meeting in 1875 to underline the need for development aligned with the people’s requirements.

He underscores a leadership philosophy that is both evidence-informed and responsive to market demands, with a keen focus on compliance with the Constitution and the National Development Plan (NDP). Dr. Movono aims for TSLS to be more facilitative and responsive in opening pathways for students.

TSLS currently manages 15 scholarship schemes and issued over 22,000 scholarships last year, including grants for both local and overseas studies. Dr. Movono indicated aspirations to accommodate at least the same number of scholarships this year, supported by a dedicated team of more than 50 staff members based in cities including Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, and Labasa.

Overall, the initiatives led by Dr. Movono reflect a hopeful direction for the future of education and training in the country, ensuring that the next generation is well-equipped to contribute positively to national development.
