New Travel and Bond Changes Set to Ease Student Experience

The Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Service (TSLS) has officially taken over the Travel and Bond Clearance and Recoveries function as of January 2, following a handover agreement with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FCRS). This transition marks a significant move towards improving the efficiency of services available to students and graduates in Fiji.

Previously, students were required to navigate a multi-step process involving both TSLS and FCRS to secure travel releases and bond clearances, which often caused delays and confusion. With this new arrangement, TSLS aims to streamline operations, significantly reducing the processing time for bond clearance from 5-7 working days to just 1-3 working days, as stated by TSLS CEO Hasmukh Lal.

Udit Singh, CEO of FCRS, expressed confidence in TSLS’s ability to manage these added responsibilities, noting that over the last seven years, their team assisted around a thousand students by handling numerous travel release requests daily. Now, FCRS will no longer entertain requests related to TSLS, thereby allowing them to redirect their focus on other areas of service.

To further enhance service delivery, TSLS plans to collaborate with the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) to streamline bond clearance processes. An agreement will allow TSLS to obtain employment verification directly from FNPF, simplifying the application process for students seeking bond clearance.

This initiative not only promises to lessen the burden on students but also embodies a larger commitment by the Fijian government to improve the educational financing system. It highlights efforts to modernize and ensure that processes surrounding student loans and scholarships are transparent and efficient.

In summary, the implementation of the Travel and Bond Clearance function by TSLS represents a notable advancement in how educational services are delivered to students in Fiji. By minimizing processing times and introducing collaborative efforts with other organizations, TSLS is taking substantial steps to enhance student welfare and accountability in the educational system. This positive development aims to foster a smoother transition for graduates into the workforce, ultimately benefiting both students and the broader community.
