New Tournaments and Initiatives Set to Transform Cricket in Fiji

Cricket Fiji is set to launch several exciting initiatives aimed at enhancing the development of cricket in the country. In a recent interview, Cricket Fiji’s chief executive, Sitiveni Rokoro, announced the introduction of the first-ever National Under-19 girls’ tournament. This significant event will showcase the top teams from zonal competitions in Suva, Nadi, and select maritime schools.

Rokoro expressed hope that winners from these zonal tournaments will participate for the first time, highlighting an essential step in fostering female participation in the sport. Additionally, a Super 4 women’s tournament will provide a vital platform for the best women players from Suva and Nadi to demonstrate their skills. This tournament will also double as a selection process for Fiji’s national team for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier scheduled for September.

To broaden the reach of cricket, Cricket Fiji is including two new districts, Lautoka and Navua, in the Under-14 boys’ and girls’ district cricket competition. Notably, this year will mark the introduction of hardball cricket for U14 boys, a thrilling development for younger players and a great opportunity to nurture their skills.

Internally, Cricket Fiji is undertaking an organizational review aimed at enhancing its efficiency and accountability. Furthermore, the Cricket for Good, Fiji program will continue through 2026, with funding from the Australian government’s Team Up initiative. This program utilizes cricket as a tool for teaching life skills and encouraging positive change, focusing on youth and women’s empowerment while fostering social inclusion throughout Fiji.
