The Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers 7s team, composed of young men from Vitogo and Naiviyago in Lautoka, is making its debut in the 7s rugby format at the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park. Previously focused on fifteens rugby and local club competitions, this marks a significant milestone for the team.
The team’s name, “Blue Light,” is rooted in a youth empowerment initiative facilitated by the Fiji Police Force in collaboration with New Zealand’s Blue Light organization. This program seeks to foster a positive relationship between law enforcement and young people, aiming to nurture leadership skills and encourage healthy lifestyle choices among the youth.
Pastor Aliveo Qereqeretabua, who works closely with the Fiji Police Force in Vitogo, highlighted the importance of the program in providing support for local youth. He stated, “Engaging them in sports is an excellent way to steer them away from drugs and other illegal activities.” The team comprises unemployed youths from the Vitogo and Naiviyago areas, and their participation in the tournament is a source of pride for the community.
Through their involvement in rugby, the Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers are not only showcasing their abilities on the field but also contributing to the development of a more united and resilient community.
The initiative underscores the positive impact of sports as a tool for empowerment and community building, illustrating how engagement in athletic pursuits can lead to improved social outcomes for young people.
This debut in the tournament presents a hopeful step forward for the youth of Vitogo and Naiviyago, demonstrating their potential and commitment to a better future.
