The Ministry of Education has declared the reintroduction of interviews for Year 13 students who aspire to enter the teaching profession. This effort is part of a collaborative initiative involving Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission of Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS). The primary goal of this initiative is to elevate the quality of teacher recruitment and training throughout Fiji.
Aseri Radrodro, the Minister for Education, highlighted the necessity of implementing rigorous selection processes to attract candidates that are not only inclined toward teaching but also possess the qualifications needed for the role. This initiative is rooted in the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which seeks to fortify partnerships among various stakeholders and the Ministry of Education, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in classrooms across the nation.
Students who meet eligibility criteria can apply for scholarships under the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme. These scholarships cover a range of Bachelor of Education programs, including specialized fields such as Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for submitting online applications to the TSLS is set for January 31, 2025. Successful applicants will receive notifications about interview schedules and locations via email and phone.
This initiative not only aims to enhance the caliber of educators in Fiji but also provides promising opportunities for aspiring teachers, ensuring that they have the necessary support to pursue their ambitions. The renewed focus on teacher training emphasizes the value placed on education within the nation, fostering a hopeful outlook for future generations of students.
