Asilika Rinieta Qalo is ready to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team in an upcoming tournament. The 22-year-old athlete from Nadogo, Saqani, with maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove, is part of a group of uncapped players competing for a spot in the Dubai 7s next weekend.
Qalo reflected on the challenges she faced in making the national extended squad. Having only taken up rugby two years ago with the Police rugby team and later with Nasinu, her journey to this point has been one filled with hard work and dedication. She expressed her gratitude for her selection, stating, “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection.” Qalo has always dreamed of wearing the national colors, but acknowledges that the path has been difficult.
The rigorous daily training schedule in a high-performance environment posed a challenge, yet she credits her support system for motivating her to persevere. “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” she said, expressing her readiness for her national duties despite being surprised by the call-up.
Qalo attended Nabua Secondary School and also participates in club netball, showcasing her versatility as an athlete. Meanwhile, the Fijiana 7s team is set to depart this weekend for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A against formidable opponents Australia, Ireland, and China.
This news highlights the determination and spirit of athletes like Qalo, demonstrating that dedication and hard work can lead to fulfilling dreams. As the Fijiana 7s team prepares for a challenging tournament, their journey serves as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes.
