A new Family Choice Supermarket and Café has opened in Walu Bay, leading to the creation of over eight job opportunities. Managing Director Laleena Devi has invested nearly $200,000 to equip the supermarket, aiming to serve the community effectively by providing easy access to essential goods. This initiative follows a recognizable trend in the region, where new community-focused businesses are being established to meet local demands and foster economic growth.

Devi explained that the demand for a supermarket near the port was driven by requests from residents of maritime islands and interior areas seeking convenient access to groceries and other necessities. Her business journey reflects a commitment to community needs; starting with a hardware store in 2012 and expanding operations from there, she recognized the potential to diversify her business further.

The Family Choice Supermarket aims to be a comprehensive shopping destination, featuring fresh produce, groceries, and hardware essentials, tailored to the diverse requirements of its customers. This aligns with other recent supermarket openings in the area, such as the Cagivou Supermarket in Kinoya, led by Fiji rugby star Jerry Tuwai. Cagivou is targeted toward creating job opportunities, specifically focusing on empowering local youth and addressing unemployment.

The emergence of these supermarkets is not merely about expanding retail options but signifies a positive step toward economic resilience in the region. By addressing local needs, these businesses are fostering community development and providing essential services which are pivotal for enhancing everyday life for residents.

As more local enterprises recognize and fulfill market needs, there is a promising outlook for economic growth and community empowerment across the region.
