Ponipate Loganimasi, a debutant for the Flying Fijians, made a significant impact by scoring two tries in their 41-17 victory over Japan, securing the Pacific Nations Cup title on Saturday. Loganimasi, who entered the game as a substitute in the second half, notably scored his first try in the 59th minute, which increased Fiji’s lead to 18-10. He followed this with another try in the 74th minute, complemented by a successful conversion from Isaiah Armstrong Ravula, sealing the championship win.
Loganimasi was called up to the team as a replacement for Selestino Ravutaumada, who is recovering from surgery. Coach Mick Byrne praised Loganimasi’s performance, noting that the opportunity for him arose from Ravutaumada’s injury. “Ponipate was there, and an opportunity came, ironically, through Selestino’s injury,” Byrne remarked, expressing excitement about Loganimasi’s promising debut and future in the sport.
Byrne also mentioned that Iosefo Masi had recommended Loganimasi as a substitute for Ravutaumada, leading to his inclusion in the lineup. When questioned about Loganimasi’s size, Byrne defended him, stating, “I think he has a great size and as a young player, he’s got a great frame to work on, and he’s got a big future in front of him.”
