Sera Nasilivata from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School has made headlines at the 2025 Coca-Cola Games National Championship by not only winning the Junior Girls 100m but also breaking a 32-year-old record. Nasilivata clocked an impressive time of 12.30 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 12.34 seconds, which was held by Masilina Rakai since 1993. Her remarkable run outpaced both the Intermediate Girls 100m champion Lidia Waqairapoa and Senior Girls blue ribbon winner Claudie David, who finished at 12.51 seconds and 12.63 seconds respectively.
Nasilivata’s stellar performance has positioned her as a strong candidate for the overall best athlete award, particularly if she also secures gold in the 4x100m relay later today, and in the 200m dash scheduled for tomorrow. The Fiji Finals are taking place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, a venue known for showcasing the emerging talents of young athletes in Fiji.
This year’s Coca-Cola Games marks the 50th anniversary of these prestigious championships, adding a sense of celebration and anticipation around the event. Similar to past performances, Nasilivata’s record-breaking success not only highlights individual excellence but also reflects the rigorous training and dedication fostered at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School, which has consistently excelled in athletics.
The ongoing athletic achievements and records being set during this championship exemplify a growing culture of excellence in Fiji, inspiring young athletes to dream big and push their limits. As we witness these impressive performances, there’s a hopeful outlook for the future of athletics in Fiji, with young competitors emerging as role models for the next generation.
