New Flying Fijians halfback Sam Wye has made his arrival in Fiji, where he will join his teammates for training at the Fijian Drua’s base in Legalega, Nadi. The 24-year-old expressed his excitement about representing Fiji in the upcoming Test matches against Australia and Scotland, which are scheduled for July 6 in Newcastle and July 12 in Suva, respectively.
Wye, who was born in New Zealand but has Fijian heritage, shared his sense of privilege regarding his selection. He noted the significance of this opportunity as it has long been a dream of his to play for Fiji. His family has a football background, with his father and uncle having played for the Lautoka football team, further connecting him to Fiji’s sports legacy.
Currently playing for Hawkes Bay in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship, Wye is one of three halfbacks in the Flying Fijians squad, alongside Simione Kuruvoli and Philip Baselala. Notably, veteran halfback Frank Lomani is sidelined for the upcoming matches due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Wye expressed eagerness to collaborate with a talented roster of players and contribute positively to the team under head coach Mick Byrne’s direction. He previously played for Ponsonby RFC, and his performance has attracted interest, leading to his inclusion in the national setup.
As the Flying Fijians prepare for their test matches, fans have reason to be hopeful and excited. The coaching staff, including Byrne, has emphasized integrating young talent like Wye to infuse energy into the team, creating a promising blend of experience and youth aimed at delivering successful performances on the international stage.
With the squad set to gather on June 26 for training and subsequent matches, the anticipation builds for what Wye and his teammates will bring to the field in July.
