Retired High Court Judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko is poised to assume the role of Speaker of Parliament following the vacancy created by President-Elect Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s transition to the presidency. The Business Committee of Parliament has announced a special sitting scheduled for next Tuesday, during which members will gather at 8 am to officially appoint the new Speaker.
Justice Jitoko’s nomination was confirmed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who noted that the decision has received full Cabinet support. Prior to his nomination, Justice Jitoko served as chief justice of the Nauru Supreme Court from 2017, and as Registrar from 2015 to 2017. His academic qualifications include a degree from the University of the South Pacific, earned in 1969, and a Bachelor of Law from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, attained in 1978.
According to the 2013 Constitution, the position of Speaker becomes vacant right before the first meeting of Parliament following a general election or when the holder assumes another public office. Following a general election or when a vacancy arises, it is mandated that Parliament elects a Speaker by simple majority who is not a Parliament member but is eligible to become one.
This transition represents an important moment for Fiji’s parliamentary process, as Justice Jitoko steps into a leadership role that could promote stability and continuity during this period of political change. His extensive legal background suggests he will bring valuable experience to the position.
The appointment of Justice Jitoko is a hopeful sign that Fiji is moving forward with capable leadership, potentially enhancing the parliamentary framework in the coming term. As the country navigates this new chapter, citizens may find reassurance in the expertise he brings to the Speaker’s office.
