The election for a new Speaker of Parliament is scheduled for December 2, 2024. This comes after the current Speaker, Tui Cakau, takes the oath of office as the new President of the Republic of Fiji Islands, which will officially leave the position vacant on November 12.

Until that date, Ratu Naiqama will continue to fulfill the responsibilities of the Speaker. During the parliamentary session on December 2, both the Government and the Opposition will have the opportunity to nominate candidates for the Speaker position, followed by a voting process to determine the successor.

This transition marks an important moment for Fijian governance, highlighting the democratic processes in place for leadership succession. The contributions of both the departing Speaker and the incoming elected officials will be crucial for the continued progress and stability of the nation’s parliamentary proceedings.

This upcoming election represents a chance for Parliament to reaffirm its commitment to democratic values and collaborative governance. Citizens can look forward to a new chapter in their legislative framework as they await the nominations and ensuing vote.
