Retired Judge Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament, winning the vote this morning with a commanding total of 34 votes. His nomination was proposed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and seconded by Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu put forward the nomination of former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, which was supported by stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj. Nadalo, however, garnered only 15 votes.

Justice Jitoko takes over the role from Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who was appointed as the President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.

This new appointment signals a significant transition in Fiji’s political landscape, and Justice Jitoko’s experience in the judiciary may help foster collaboration and understanding in Parliament. The active participation of both government and opposition members in the nomination process highlights a commitment to democracy and healthy political discourse in Fiji.
