An independent selection panel will be formed to evaluate and shortlist candidates for the position of Commissioner of Police. This announcement was made in a press statement following a meeting of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) that took place in Suva.
The commission stated that after the panel completes its assessment, it will review the findings and make a recommendation for the appointment to the President. A total of 30 applications have been submitted for the Commissioner of Police role, with four of those applicants being women.
In addition to this, the COC also addressed the vacancy for the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC). According to the Constitution’s Section 75 (6), the EC chairperson must have been, or be qualified to be, a judge. Currently, the commission is evaluating potential candidates for this role following the resignation of Ms. Barbara Malimali.
Furthermore, the COC has approved recommendations from an independent committee regarding the salary and allowances for individuals appointed to serve in constitutional offices.
This ongoing process reflects a commitment to transparency and inclusivity in public service positions, particularly with a notable representation of female candidates for the police chief role. As the COC continues its evaluations, there is hope for a strong and capable leadership that will enhance public safety and uphold the integrity of electoral processes.
