The Constitutional Office Commission has approved the establishment of an independent selection panel tasked with reviewing and narrowing down candidates for the crucial role of Commissioner of Police. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who is also the Chairperson of the Commission, indicated that once the panel submits its assessment report, the Commission will evaluate it before making a final recommendation to the President.

Rabuka noted that the Commission has received a total of 30 applications for the Commissioner of Police position, which includes four female candidates, showcasing a hopeful commitment to gender representation in law enforcement leadership.

Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed the ongoing search for a new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, following the resignation of Barbara Malimali. Under the Constitution, particularly Section 75(6), the new Chairperson must be a judge or a qualified individual for the role, ensuring that the selection adheres to legal standards.

The Prime Minister also mentioned the Commission’s endorsement of recommendations from an independent committee regarding the pay and allowances for individuals appointed to temporary positions within constitutional offices, aligning with Section 136 of the 2013 Constitution.

This proactive approach by the Commission demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability in governance, ensuring that significant positions are filled by capable individuals. By advocating for both gender representation and due diligence in the appointments process, there is a positive outlook for the future of law enforcement and electoral integrity in the country.
