As the new academic year commences, concerns regarding drug use, glue sniffing, and bullying in schools remain prominent issues. The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has called upon parents, teachers, and communities to collaborate to effectively tackle these challenges.
Radrodro highlighted the crucial role of over 13,000 teachers who bear significant responsibilities in shaping the education landscape. In addition to teachers, school chaplains are expected to play a vital role in providing support to students during this pivotal time. He emphasized the importance of education as a tool that empowers families, combats poverty, and fosters overall community development.
During a students’ dedication church service at the Centenary Church in Suva, Radrodro recognized the progress achieved in the previous year, which he attributed to the cooperative efforts between parents and the Ministry of Education. Last year saw an impressive enrollment of 225,000 students from preschool to Year 13, and Radrodro anticipates an increase in numbers this year.
The Ministry has plans to visit schools across the nation to ensure that teachers receive the necessary support, irrespective of their locations. Radrodro urged parents to strengthen their involvement and support for their children as the school year begins. He reminded teachers that the upcoming day would be student-free, with classes resuming on Tuesday.
As the academic year gets underway, there is a sense of optimism for growth and improvements within the educational system, demonstrating the collective commitment to overcoming obstacles and providing a nurturing environment for students.
