To promote interest in sugarcane farming, the Sugar Ministry has launched the New Farmers Scheme and Land Lease Renewal Programme. This initiative, as announced by acting permanent secretary Reshmi Kumari, has a budget of $1 million allocated specifically for first-time land purchasers engaging in cane farming. Additionally, it applies to farmers whose land leases are set to be renewed between August 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025.
Under this program, eligible participants can receive a grant covering 30 percent of their land purchase costs, up to a maximum of $7,500. Applications for the grant opened on November 1, and will remain available until April 30 of the following year. It is important to note that the grants will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
To qualify for this assistance, the land purchased must encompass at least 10 acres of suitable and fertile land for sugar cane cultivation.
