The iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in partnership with the Environment Ministry, has implemented a requirement for approval regarding the import and export of ‘tabua’ or whale’s teeth, a significant cultural symbol for the iTaukei people in Fiji, effective January this year. This regulation aims to enforce stricter controls on the movement of tabua across borders.

It is important to highlight that the import and export of tabua into the United States is strictly prohibited, thus no approvals will be granted for such transactions. While there are currently no specific quotas for the import of tabua, the Ministry will monitor the monthly export limit of 16 pieces. Individuals wishing to export these items must comply with relevant laws, including obtaining import permissions from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment as well as necessary permits from their respective countries.

Approval letters and permits will be distributed on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. Therefore, those planning to take tabua overseas are advised to arrange this in advance, as last-minute requests can lead to complications due to quota limits. Furthermore, adherence to the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” or CITES Act, along with compliance with Customs regulations, is encouraged to support national and international conservation efforts.

This move not only emphasizes the cultural importance of the tabua but also reflects a strong commitment to preserving Fijian heritage while ensuring responsible environmental practices. It serves as a reminder of the necessity of safeguarding natural resources and cultural artifacts for future generations.

In summary, the introduction of regulatory measures regarding tabua reflects an important step in protecting both cultural heritage and environmental sustainability.
