A new rehabilitation clinic has officially opened at Tamavua Twomey Hospital, showcasing a collaborative effort among the Ministry of Health, LDS Charities, and the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The facility, which represents a significant investment of $550,000, was inaugurated by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu. This clinic is expected to play a vital role in enhancing Fiji’s rehabilitation services, which currently cater to over 5,900 patients each month.

Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that the focus of rehabilitation extends beyond physical recovery. He stated, “It embodies far more than mere recovery; it is about restoring dignity, enhancing the quality of life, and empowering individuals of all ages to live independently and meaningfully, enabling them to participate in school, work, and community life, while providing care for themselves and their families.”

Dr. Pratima Singh, the Head of Rehabilitation at Twomey Hospital, noted that this new center will continuously evolve and reinforce the services provided, enhancing support for patients in need.

In a related initiative, plans are underway for a new National Rehabilitation Centre, set to replace the older facility at Tamavua Military Hospital. This ambitious project is backed by a $22.2 million grant from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and aims to enhance rehabilitation services across Fiji. The opening of the new clinic at Tamavua Twomey Hospital and the establishment of the National Rehabilitation Centre reflect a commitment to improving healthcare standards and rehabilitation support across Fiji, signaling a hopeful future for patient care in the region.

Such developments highlight the importance of international partnerships and investment in healthcare, promising extensive benefits for the Fijian community as services continue to expand and improve.
