In a significant initiative to strengthen family ties and address social challenges, Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, the Tui Sabeto, has put forth new regulations to better the community of Sabeto.

One of the major changes is the prohibition of kava consumption in the village from midnight Saturday until 6 PM Sunday. This regulation aims to encourage residents to engage more with their families and attend church services, prioritizing quality time and community solidarity.

Ratu Viliame emphasized that this move is a part of a larger effort to improve community cohesion alongside addressing the escalating drug crisis within the village. He stated, “This decision is about ensuring that we spend quality time with our families and focus on the things that truly matter.” By fostering these connections, he hopes to help residents reconnect with their cultural and spiritual heritage amidst the challenges of modern life.

In addition to the kava restrictions, the Tui Sabeto has also implemented a ban on vehicle movement within the village from 10 PM to 5 AM. This measure is intended to reduce both the illegal sale and use of drugs, which frequently occur at night, thereby creating a safer environment for the community.

Ratu Viliame’s leadership encompasses a broader range of issues, including food security, poverty reduction, and ensuring the safety of women and children. He highlighted the importance of self-reliance, stating, “By planting our own food, we can ensure access to nutritious meals, even with the rising cost of living.”

While committed to community solutions, Ratu Viliame acknowledges the need for stronger legal frameworks to strengthen these initiatives. He actively supports the development of village by-laws to grant local leaders greater authority in managing community issues like drug abuse and social disorder. The recent discussions in the GCC meeting on this topic have given him hope for future progress.

This initiative by Ratu Viliame to help the community rebuild its foundation on family values and cultural heritage reflects a positive step towards a healthier, drug-free environment, which can inspire other communities facing similar challenges. By emphasizing unity and encouraging self-sufficiency, the potential for transformative change in Sabeto looks promising.
