As of January, the iTaukei Affairs Ministry and the Environment Ministry in Fiji have implemented new regulations regarding the import and export of ‘tabua’, or whale’s tooth, a culturally significant item for the iTaukei community. This enhanced enforcement aims to ensure that the trade of tabua is conducted responsibly and sustainably.

The two ministries have emphasized that while there are currently no specific quotas for tabua imports, there is a monthly export limitation of 16 tabuas. Individuals looking to import or export a tabua must obtain the necessary permissions from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment as well as permits from their respective home countries. It is crucial to note that any importation or exportation of tabua to the United States remains strictly prohibited.

To facilitate the process, approval letters and permits will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, individuals intending to take a tabua overseas should plan well in advance to avoid last-minute issues that could coincide with the monthly quota.

All stakeholders are encouraged to adhere to the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES Act) and relevant customs regulations to promote national and international conservation efforts.

In summary, the stricter regulations introduced by the Fijian ministries aim to protect both the tabua and the cultural heritage of the iTaukei people, while ensuring that all trading activities align with environmental conservation goals. This effort reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance cultural practices with sustainable trade practices. The approach fosters a deeper appreciation for traditional items and their significance while promoting responsible stewardship of natural resources.
