Starting this January, the iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in conjunction with the Environment Ministry, has implemented a requirement for approval regarding the import and export of the ‘tabua,’ or whale’s tooth, which holds significant traditional value for the iTaukei people of Fiji.

This decision comes as part of an effort to strengthen enforcement around the handling of tabua, ensuring that its trade is regulated. Notably, the export and import of tabua into the United States remains strictly prohibited under any circumstances.

While there is no specific quota for tabua imports, the Ministry is enforcing a monthly export limit of 16 tabuas. Individuals wishing to export must comply with all relevant laws, which include obtaining export permissions from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment as well as necessary permits from their respective countries.

It is important for individuals planning to take a tabua abroad to request approval letters and permits early, as these are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Last-minute requests often clash with the established quota, hindering the export process.

Furthermore, adherence to international conservation frameworks is crucial. All parties are encouraged to comply with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, commonly referred to as the CITES Act, along with customs regulations.

This initiative not only promotes the cultural significance of the tabua but also plays a vital role in wildlife conservation, highlighting the importance of preserving endangered species in ecosystems around the globe.

In summary, the new regulations surrounding the trade of tabua signify a commitment to cultural heritage and environmental sustainability, fostering a greater awareness and responsibility towards endangered species.
