To promote sugarcane farming among newcomers, the Sugar Ministry has launched the New Farmers Scheme and Land Lease Renewal Program. Acting Permanent Secretary Reshmi Kumari announced that the initiative has a total funding of $1 million, which will be available for individuals purchasing land for the first time to cultivate sugarcane. Additionally, existing farmers who are renewing their land leases between August 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025, can also benefit from this financial support.
Under this program, the ministry will cover 30% of the costs, with a maximum grant cap of $7,500. Applications for the grant opened on November 1 and will remain open until April 30 next year. Grants will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and applicants must ensure the land they intend to purchase contains at least 10 acres of suitable, arable land for sugarcane planting.
This initiative not only supports the growth of new farmers but also contributes to the revitalization of the sugar industry, which is critical for the local economy. It encourages sustainable agricultural practices while helping individuals establish themselves in a vital sector.
It is hopeful that this program will inspire a new generation of farmers, enhance agricultural productivity, and strengthen the overall economy through increased sugarcane production.
