New Political Party on the Horizon? Duru’s Next Move!

Former SODELPA General Secretary Lenatasi Duru has announced his collaboration with members of the G16 Opposition to explore the formation of a new political party. This decision follows Duru’s resignation from SODELPA in December 2022 after the party decided to join a coalition with The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP).

Concerns about recent developments within the Coalition government have prompted Duru’s actions, particularly regarding the integration of former FijiFirst parliamentarians into ministerial positions. He emphasized the need for political maneuvering to ensure government stability, stating, “Where the Prime Minister is coming from, he needs to secure his position, especially with Government constantly under threat.”

Duru also remarked on the sacrifices made by SODELPA during coalition negotiations, questioning the leadership’s strategic direction and priorities. “We are trying to offer something different. Politics is a game where you play your cards and play them right,” he asserted. He has committed to addressing the iTaukei community’s concerns about unmet expectations under the previous FijiFirst administration with a comprehensive manifesto and constitution for the new party.

Despite the challenges ahead, Duru is hopeful. He highlighted the resources available to the party, indicating that effective utilization of financial gains from previous governments will be critical in prioritizing the interests of the people. “Since coming back from working on this initiative, we are focused on ensuring that the interests of the people are put at the forefront,” he said.

This initiative parallels the efforts of other G16 members, including Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who have also announced intentions to form a new political party. This collective effort is poised to shake up Fiji’s political landscape and enhance democratic engagement ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In conclusion, Duru’s exploration of a new political party alongside G16 members represents a significant opportunity for revitalizing political discourse in Fiji. By offering fresh ideas and a renewed focus on community concerns, there is hope that this initiative can lead to improved governance, fostering a more inclusive political environment for all Fijians. The movements currently taking place suggest a shift toward a more participatory democracy, which could effectively address the pressing needs of the populace.
