Former SODELPA general secretary Lenatasi Duru is collaborating with members of the G16 Opposition to explore the establishment of a new political party, following his resignation from SODELPA in December 2022. His departure was largely influenced by SODELPA’s decision to form a coalition with The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP).

Duru has raised concerns regarding the current Coalition government’s dynamics, particularly the integration of former FijiFirst parliamentarians into key ministerial roles. He noted the political challenges that the Coalition faces, suggesting that the Prime Minister is engaged in significant maneuvering to secure his position amidst ongoing threats. Duru emphasized the need for a novel approach to politics, stating, “We are trying to offer something different. Politics is a game where you play your cards and play them right.”

Addressing the dissatisfaction of the iTaukei community regarding unmet expectations under the FijiFirst government, Duru indicated that the new party’s manifesto and constitution would be designed to address these issues more thoroughly. He expressed confidence in the available resources from past administrations, highlighting the necessity of effectively utilizing them for the benefit of the populace. “We just need to take time in making sure that those resources and financial gains from previous governments are utilized effectively,” he stated.
