Jone Usamate, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has announced his involvement in the formation of a new political party named PeopleFirst. This initiative aims to incorporate many of the positive elements of the former ruling FijiFirst party while addressing what he sees as its weaknesses. Usamate emphasized in a recent social media post that the new party will be inclusive and dedicated to all Fijians, explicitly stating that it will not be affiliated with Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The core principle of PeopleFirst will be a commitment to democracy, equality, and respect for all communities, particularly the iTaukei. Usamate expressed a strong belief in the importance of inclusivity and equality as stated in the 2013 Constitution, affirming that all citizens deserve equal treatment. “We recognize the concerns of the iTaukei and all ethnic groups, ensuring that everyone is treated equally,” he noted.

Reflecting on his past, Usamate has been open about his journey in politics, having served in the cabinet during the military government and later as a key member of FijiFirst. Recently, he has been functioning as an independent MP in the Opposition, which he finds has equipped him with valuable experience.

This move to establish PeopleFirst resonates with the ongoing shifts within Fiji’s political landscape, where forms of unity and new political expressions are emerging as the nation heads towards its next elections. The initiative brings hope for a more representative political dialogue that prioritizes the needs of all Fijians, fostering a sense of collective progress.

As Fiji navigates this pivotal phase, Usamate’s focus on building a party that reinforces democratic values and inclusion presents an encouraging opportunity for civic engagement and better governance.
