Some members of the Opposition are in the process of establishing a new political party, named the G16, aimed at contesting the upcoming 2026 general election in Fiji. This initiative arises in light of recent political shifts, including the deregistration of the FijiFirst party, as former MPs believe they present a better alternative to the current government led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, which has been described as chaotic and scandal-ridden.
The announcement was made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu during a media conference at the Suva Business Centre. He stated that the G16 intends to fulfill the role of a loyal opposition and lay the groundwork for enhanced governance alternatives for all Fijians. Seruiratu emphasized the commitment to values such as unity, fairness, and humility while addressing the critical need for accountability from the current coalition government.
Criticism was directed towards the government for failing to adhere to key promises made during the 2022 elections. Seruiratu highlighted that the current administration has grown to be the largest cabinet in Fiji’s history, with 22 ministers and assistants, contradicting their own promises for a leaner government. Acknowledging their history with FijiFirst, he noted the importance of learning from past successes and failures as they forge a path forward.
The G16 aims to create “a safe, secure, and prosperous Fiji” framed around ideals of merit-based equality and national unity. Such a focus could invigorate political engagement amongst the electorate, as the societal changes and economic challenges facing Fiji necessitate diverse political representation that echoes the citizens’ needs.
As the G16 begins the process of registering their new political party, there is a sense of optimism that this move will lead to a revitalized political landscape, enhancing voter engagement and enabling a more participatory democratic environment. This initiative may reflect a hopeful shift towards improved governance that aligns more closely with the aspirations of the Fijian populace as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
