Newly appointed Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, recently made an important first visit to the Fiji Police Force headquarters, where he was welcomed by Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci. This inaugural visit set the tone for his commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of the police force and rebuilding trust within the communities they serve.

During his visit, Naivalurua highlighted the urgency of operational improvements. He stated, “It’s too early to predict outcomes, but I’m looking forward to collaborating with you to win back the hearts of the people we serve.” Emphasizing the need for action over words, he urged police personnel to rise above criticisms and to demonstrate their capabilities through tangible results, saying, “Let’s prove them wrong by our actions where results are seen.”

As a former Commissioner of Police, Naivalurua brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He plans to hold comprehensive briefings with police officials next week to better understand the ongoing challenges facing the force. This transition occurs at a pivotal time, following the interim oversight of former Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who faced numerous unresolved investigations that impacted the police’s performance.

One significant initiative under his leadership is the “Restore Blue” program, aimed at enhancing police accountability and operational standards with support from international partners. This program represents a hopeful step towards revitalizing the Fiji Police Force, addressing existing issues, and fostering improved public trust.

Overall, Naivalurua’s proactive approach signals a promising future for the Fiji Police Force. His commitment to operational effectiveness, community engagement, and strategic initiatives positions the force to overcome past challenges and ultimately create a safer environment for all Fijians. This leadership change symbolizes an opportunity for substantial reform that could enhance the quality of policing across Fiji.
