Newly appointed Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has assumed his role amidst growing expectations and criticism surrounding the Fiji Police Force. With a career built on policing, Mr. Tudravu is acutely aware of the negative connotations associated with the force, particularly due to incidents involving officers and illegal activities, including drug trafficking.

In his inaugural press conference, Commissioner Tudravu emphasized his commitment to addressing “internal bickering” and resolving organizational issues within the force. He acknowledged the high expectations from the public and expressed his belief in the importance of spiritual guidance during this challenging transition.

“There’s a lot of labeling against the Fiji Police Force in terms of conduct,” he stated, urging anyone with evidence of wrongdoing to come forward. He reassured that established procedures are in place to address allegations against officers.

Mr. Tudravu stressed the need for transparency in the police force, aiming to dispel notions that law enforcement might be engaging in illegal activities. “These are the big challenges that we have. I don’t want to waste my time on internal matters; I have other priorities to advance this organization,” he declared.

Highlighting the importance of focusing on community service, he stressed that ending the internal disputes within the police is crucial for rebuilding public trust. “People need the service of the Fiji Police. For us to do that, the bickering within needs to stop,” he concluded.

This renewed leadership from Commissioner Tudravu signals a potential shift towards restoring public confidence in the Fiji Police Force, aiming to create a more unified organization dedicated to serving its community. The hope lies in Mr. Tudravu’s vision for a transparent and accountability-driven police force, which ultimately benefits both officers and the communities they serve.
