Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Constitutional Offices Commission is set to evaluate the selection of a new Commissioner of Police as soon as recommendations are submitted to him and the Secretariat. During a recent media briefing, Rabuka, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Constitutional Offices Commission, confirmed that a meeting has been scheduled to address the selection process for the police chief.
Rabuka emphasized the importance of this upcoming meeting, where various applications for the role of Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) will be reviewed. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua added that the Constitutional Offices Commission will be in consultation with him regarding the appointment of the new COMPOL, although that discussion is yet to take place.
The application period for the position concluded last month, generating interest with over 20 applicants vying for the role. For the time being, Assistant Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew will continue to serve in an acting capacity until a permanent appointment is made.
This transition in leadership within the police force is seen as an opportunity for positive change and improved governance in law enforcement. With a range of diverse candidates to consider, there is hope that the new Commissioner of Police will bring fresh perspectives and strategies to enhance public safety and community trust.
