Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) will evaluate the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police as soon as the recommendations are submitted to him and the Secretariat. In a recent media briefing, Rabuka, who also serves as the Chairperson of the COC, mentioned that the Secretariat has set a date for this crucial discussion.

He indicated that they will soon convene to review the various applications received for the Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) position. Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that he would be consulted on the new COMPOL appointment, although that consultation has not yet taken place.

The application period for the role closed last month, with over 20 candidates applying for the position. Currently, Assistant Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew is serving in the acting capacity.

This process reflects a significant step toward a transparent and thorough appointment procedure in Fijian law enforcement, ensuring that a qualified individual will ultimately take on this pivotal role. It is a hopeful indication that the government is committed to strengthening its leadership in public safety.
