Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is set to consider the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) as soon as the recommendations are finalized and presented. As the Chairperson of the COC, Rabuka informed the media that a meeting has been scheduled for this purpose.
He emphasized the importance of reviewing the numerous applications received for the COMPOL position, following the closure of the application process last month, which attracted over 20 candidates. Additionally, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua confirmed that he would be consulted on the selection of the new COMPOL, though that consultation is yet to take place.
Currently, Assistant Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew is serving in an acting capacity as the transition process unfolds.
This proactive approach by the government indicates a commitment to enhancing the leadership within the police force, ensuring a thorough selection process that promotes accountability and effectiveness. As the situation develops, the community can look forward to a robust and capable candidate being appointed to this crucial role.
