The Ministry of Education is collaborating with the Office of the Solicitor General to enhance initiatives aimed at combating drug use in schools. Permanent Secretary Selina Kuruleca stated that this partnership seeks to improve strategies for drug prevention and enforcement within educational environments.
“We are still engaged with the Office of the Solicitor General to clarify what actions are permissible under the legislation,” Ms. Kuruleca explained. She highlighted that existing laws could empower a permanent secretary to prioritize the safety and well-being of children.
She noted the success of ongoing spot checks in schools, which have proven beneficial, particularly for those institutions that regularly implement these measures. Ms. Kuruleca added that the ministry is working alongside legal experts to better comprehend the relevant legislation regarding drug prevention and how it can support efforts like spot checks to identify and mitigate drug issues.
“We are collaborating closely with them and our stakeholders, including the Attorney-General’s Office, to determine the most effective ways to address this challenge,” she concluded.
